DEPRESSION INTERVENTION WORKS WONDERS!

A telephonic outreach and care management program was initiated with a randomized trial of depressed workers. The care manager encouraged selected participants to engage in outpatient therapy and medication compliance. The care manager provided peer to peer Best Practices guidance to the treating providers.

At follow-up the intervention group was significantly lower on a depression scale, had significantly higher job retention, and significantly more hours worked than the "usual care" group.

Workers who received the telephonic intervention services had two weeks of more work productivity than the control group. This study provides great validation for telephonic intervention with depressed employees. We at BMI, have known this for many years, as telephonic outreach has been one of our core services. If you are having challenges in showing the value of outreach and case management services to upper level management, we suggest you familiarize yourself with this article.

Telephone Screening, Outreach, and Care Management for Depressed Workers and Impact on Clinical and Work Productivity Outcomes. Wang et al. JAMA. 2007; 298: 1401-1411.

HOW DEPRESSED ARE YOUR WORKERS?

The just-released National Survey on Drug Use and Health presents data showing that 7% of full time workers experienced a major depressive episode (MDE) in the preceding year.

The occupations with the highest rates of MDE were personal care and service occupations (10.8%) and food service occupations (10.3%). Of the 21 categories of workers, Office and Administrative Support was the 7th most depressed (8.1%), Sales was the 10th (6.7%), Management was 16th (5.8%), and Architect and Surveyors were 21st (4.3%).

The highest rates for women were in Food service (14.8%) and the highest rates for men were in the arts, design, sports and media occupations (6.7%)

BMI can develop a Workplace Intervention for Depression Screening and Early Identification for the workers you represent in these industry sectors.

COACHING: Individuals referred to a coach are already generally aware that something isn’t working as well as they would like it to work. They have experienced situations where intentions were misunderstood and perceptions were inaccurate. They know there were times when work didn’t get done or employees didn’t follow through with responsibilities.

A BMI Workplace Coach will help develop the employee's primary skills, enhance secondary skills and develop new skills. Coaches use a combination of testing, workplace interviews, feedback, critical thinking and challenge that supports change and growth.
