Fitness For Duty BMI's approach to these sensitive and potentially volatile situations is as follows.

I. Initial Threat Assessment
A BMI workplace psychologist consults with several key management personnel. BMI will obtain information about the employee and provide specific steps to protect your employees and maintain safety in the workplace. This can generally be completed immediately when you call.

II. Fitness for Duty Examination
FFD exams are a common recommendation as part of threat assessment where significant risk has been identified. Conducted by a BMI Board Certified Psychiatrist, the exam provides concrete information regarding an employee's abilities and potential risks.

A preliminary report will be delivered by telephone, followed by a comprehensive written report. Our FFD exams always include empirically based psychological testing (MMPI or Millon) to confirm diagnosis and recommendations. FFD's are generally completed within three business days of your request.

Warning Signs

Employers should consider FFD Examinations when they observe any of the following with employees:

  • Threat of violence
  • Impaired concentration
  • Paranoid thinking
  • Abusive or intimidating behavior
  • Anticipated return from extended medical leave
  • Recommendations for reasonable accommodations
  • Unusual or bizarre behavior or statements
